A pseudonym historically associated with good thoughts like these: “Love of the truth is the greatest Christian virtue.” ”Love of the truth is the greatest Christian truth” (Pascal). Montalte is a brilliant critic of pedantry and a defender of honest learning. He is not always right, but he thinks with a kind of fierce humility. He is also hilarious. If you’re thinking, this blogger has no shortage of delusions about himself– well, I make no claim to equal Montalte. But we are defined in small part by the qualities we honestly admire, even if we very often fail to embody what we admire. One can do worse than to admire a relentless and laughing love of the truth.
